ParenTalk

ParenTalk is a great newsletter put out by the Alabama Department of Children's Affairs. This month's newsletter covers topics from "101 Ways to Praise a Child", how to determine if your child is ready for kindergarten, guidelines on leaving children at home alone, ideas to cure the summertime blues, to the top 10 kids' health issues to be aware of in 2010. To sign-up for this newsletter visit this website.

  1. the 101 ways is a great thing when you have a typical child. Those of us who have RAD children have to be careful about the amount of praise we give. There are serious paybacks for saying nice things to a RAD kid. We do other things to affirm them...talk is too much until they are healed.

  2. We have a book in our library called, "99 Ways to Drive Your Child Sane". The book is intended to help parents living with a child diagnosed with RAD restore fun to parenting.

    One of my favorites is:

    #1 APPEASE THEM
For kids that pee in their rooms--Sprinkle peas around the room at night or while the child is gone. When the child is awake or home you discover the peas, get a bowl to collect them and show your delight over the child growing peas by peeing. "I knew this would happen someday if you just peed enough peas were sure to grow." Make sure you have peas (clean ones please) that night for dinner.
